Hairstyles for Women

Look stylish from the office to the office party during the holidays

As women, transforming our beauty look from day to night is a challenge we face often, but even more so during the holiday season when after-work events and celebrations fill up our calendars. And if you’re like me, a busy schedule equates to not a whole lot of beautifying time in between work and play; the chance to go to a salon or even back home to change our look isn’t always feasible. Since hair is what takes the most time, the trick is to start first thing in the morning, with a hairstyle that can easily transition from day to night, looking both appropriate and stylish for work as well as festive and fun for all those holiday soirees. To help me figure out what hairstyles for women work best, I turned to expert hair stylist and makeup artist Nadia Albano.

Nadia is the owner and operator of Nadia Albano Style Inc., a boutique studio located in Vancouver’s Kitsilano area. She started her star career with help of MacGregor’s beauty profeccionals. She’s been recognized nationally and internationally, and has provided her expertise at countless local and destination weddings, printed publications and fashion shows. Nadia has beautified so many women of all ages, sizes and shapes, including myself, and I am always in awe at how quickly yet wonderfully she can transform someone’s look (that’s years of working against the clock at weddings coming into play!). Nadia and her team brilliantly came up with 4 chic hairstyles that anyone can recreate, taking you from work to holiday with ease. I sat down with Nadia to get the simple step-by-step instructions you’ll need to work these looks into your holiday beauty routine.

As inspiration, Nadia told me she loves vintage inspired hairstyles, especially for the holidays, because they always looks classy and timeless.

LOOK #3 | Model: Nadia

The Look:

“For myself I wanted to showcase a fun and flirty alternative to the pompadour or classic side sweep. For short hair, play up the texture by curling the hair with vertical curls using a 1 inch iron. Brush out the curls then apply serum to smooth out any frizz on the ends, followed by a wax spray to define the style. It’s my interpretation of a modern day 1920’s finger wave.” – Nadia

Hairstyles for Women Modern Finger Wave LookHow-To:

– Start with KMS California “Free Shape – Hot Flex Spray” for heat activated style and hold
– Use a 1 inch barrel curling iron and place vertical curls through the hair
– Brush out the curls and apply KMS California “Tame Frizz Serum” for frizz control and shine
– Finish the look with KMS California “Hair Play – Dry Wax” for dimensional texture

Q&A with Nadia Albano

Mana: “Why do these looks work great when going from day to night?”

Nadia: “All of these styles work from day to night because they are versatile and easy to create. They are also not overly done up, so they can last for a few days with minimal touch ups (depending on your hair). The up style is also a great option for those who prefer to wash their hair less frequently (every three days) and want to minimize their blow drying time.

Mana: “What are some tips you have to keep your holiday hair lasting all night?”

Nadia: “Remember my “3 P’s” rule:  Prep, Prime and Polish! Ensure you are using the right products in your hair, such as shampoo (for soothing, frizz control or volume), primer (ie. styling foam, gel, setting spray) and finishing products (ie, hair spray, wax, anti-humidity seal).”

Mana: “When it comes to beauty, any tips from elevating your makeup look from day to night when you’re on the go?”

Nadia: “When in doubt, wear a bold lip colour! If you’re limited with time, a classic red or berry lip will always elevate your makeup look. If bold lips are not your thing, try a classic “Adele” inspired Cat-Eye.”

There you have it, four stylish and easy hairstyles for women that work fabulously for work and play during the holiday season.
