Reporting to the Regional Human Resources Manager, the Health and Safety Advisor position leads and oversees the claims management and health and safety programs and systems in accordance with recognized best practices and applicable legislation.

This position leads and oversees the claims management and health and safety programs and systems in accordance with recognized best practices and applicable legislation. The role is responsible for the promotion and assurance of safe work practices and the maintenance / implementation of programs, systems, tools and resources for injury prevention and claims management at operations.

The individual provides consultative services in all areas of Health and Safety (H&S) and builds programs, systems, tools and resources for implementation. The individual also oversees and participates in all aspects of Health & Safety programs including injury prevention initiatives, claims management activities, regular inspections, safety meetings, investigations and safety events.

Key Responsibilities:

Claims Management
  • Oversees the management of work-related claims and supports the on-site management teams at each location in the management of claims.
  • Develops and provides training on tools and resources for claims management.
  • Measures the effectiveness of claims management efforts and recommends opportunities for improvement.
  • Reviews trends for injury claims and identifies opportunities for improved claims management processes.
  • Ensures that appropriate stay-at-work and return-to-work initiatives are in place across the company.
  • Works with site Human Resources and management teams, employees, doctors, unions and service providers to facilitate stay-at-work and return-to-work efforts and employee accommodations.
  • Establishes and manages the relationship with 3rd party services to support stay-at-work and return-to-work efforts.
  • Oversees all injury claims appeals, compliance orders, penalties, assessments and similar items with Health & Safety regulatory bodies.
  • Makes presentations and recommendations to management on claims and claims management results.
  • Takes on additional responsibilities as required.

Health & Safety (H&S) Programs

  • Researches health and safety issues by reviewing relevant legislation, internal data, external sources and networking with other safety professionals.
  • Identifies the need for, researches and writes recommendations for, and implements changes to site H&S programs, policies and procedures.
  • Plans and implements H&S training for employees.
  • Ensures H&S policy and program compliance with regulatory requirements and well as compliance with company expectations at site operations.
  • Assists in the development, evaluation and upgrading of safety programs.
  • Ensures completion of hazard assessments and root cause analysis investigations with completion of corrective measures.
  • Reviews existing H&S program and procedures and updates to ensure a safe work environment for employees, contractors, and visitors to all facilities. In consultation with corporate, develops and aligns policies and priorities with site focused health and safety strategies.
  • Works cooperatively with site Human Resources and management teams for the appropriate implementation and improvement of H&S initiatives.
  • Oversees and facilitates responses to all compliance orders, penalties, assessments and similar items with H&S regulatory bodies.
  • Provides advice and resources to the H&S committees and supports the operation of H&S committees.
  • Represents the company on H&S matters with external groups and associations.
  • Oversees H&S audits and safety certification programs
  • Manages the H&S program including administration of the budget, maintenance of applicable documentation, establishment of performance measures and analysis of H&S program results and trends.
  • Makes presentations to management on H&S initiatives and results at site levels.
  • Takes on additional responsibilities as required.

What You Bring
  • Post-secondary education in a relevant field
  • At least 3 years of related work experience
  • H&S-related designation an asset (e.g. CRSP or CHSC)
  • Experience in analyzing, establishing and monitoring stay-at-work and return-to-work programs
  • Claims management experience
  • Experience in H&S with multi-site,
  • Experience in the application of H&S programs in gaming, Food and Beverage and/or hospitality operations
  • Knowledge of all applicable H&S and human rights legislation such as the Workers’ Compensation Act and Regulations
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a proven ability to work productively with employees, managers, contractors and support groups
  • Experience in developing and delivering H&S training programs
  • Understanding of union environments and collective agreements and how they relate to health and safety programs, disability claims management, return-to-work and accommodation initiatives
